Launching a personal watercraft or PWC is more complicated than you might think. However, a little practice and the right know-how will go a long way towards making the whole process easier and more convenient. If you’re not sure where to start, this guide from the experts at Miller Implement can help.

Practice in Advance

The trickiest part of launching a PWC is usually getting the alignment just right. We highly recommend finding an empty parking lot or other safe space so that you can practice backing up. Cones can be used to approximate the launching ranch. With enough practice, you’ll be able to launch your PWC much faster and more easily.

Arrive Prepared

Once you arrive at the launching dock, pull over so that you can make the necessary preparations. Put on your life jacket, attach the top rope (if you’re using one), and do one final check on your PWC. Complete any additional preparations like applying sunblock, setting up the killswitch, and inserting the drain plug at this time.

Your next step will be to loosen up the winch straps and safety chains. This will allow your PWC to float once you back into the water. You should also test the throttle at this time. By doing these things now, you can minimize the time you spend using the dock so that others can take their turn sooner.

Release Your PWC Into the Water

When you’re all done with preparations, start the PWC’s engine to ensure that you won’t get stalled on the ramp. If other people are using the dock, take your place in line and wait until your turn comes. Check that everything is clear and slowly reverse your trailer into the water. Stop once your trailer is somewhat submerged so that your PWC can float, and park your vehicle. Someone will need to get out of the vehicle and pull the PWC out into the water. If you’re alone, use a rope to tie up the PWC so that it doesn’t float away while you are finding a place to park your vehicle. If you’re with someone else, decide which of you will park the vehicle and which will handle the PWC.

Pull Away From the Dock

Wait until your PWC hits water at least three feet deep before you climb aboard and hit the starter. This will help prevent the intake from sucking up debris and getting clogged. Carefully maneuver away from the dock and give others as much space as possible. Once you’re in open water, open up on the throttle.
