Starting the Trike

The first step is to start the vehicle:

  • Engage the brakes.
  • Engage the clutch.
  • Shift into first gear.
  • Release the brakes.
  • Release the clutch as you increase the throttle.

Shifting Gears

The next tip for riding a trike is to shift the gears:

  • Drop the throttle.
  • Engage the clutch.
  • Shift to the desired gear.
  • Let the clutch out.

Remember to shift gears carefully because it’s easy to lose control of the vehicle. Only shift your three-wheel motorcycle when driving in a straight line.

Turning

Riding a trike would be boring if you only went straight! You’ll need to know how to turn your vehicle.

Turning on a Bike vs a Trike

On a traditional motorcycle, the rider will use counter steering to turn. This means the operator leans in order to counter centrifugal forces.

On a three-wheel motorcycle, riders use direct steering instead. This process is similar to that of steering a car. However, instead of moving a steering wheel, you will tilt the trike’s handlebars to turn.

Turning

Once you see an upcoming turn:

  • Start slowing down.
  • Maintain speed as you approach the turn.
  • Turn the handlebars in the appropriate direction.
  • Wait until exiting the corner to hit the throttle again.

You should focus on trying to execute a smooth turn. If the turn is jerky, you may lose control of the three-wheeler. Remember that trikes are much wider than a bike, and that will affect the angle that you take a turn.

Stopping on a Trike

Three-wheel motorcycles are big and heavy vehicles. This means they need plenty of space to come to a complete stop. Make sure to give yourself space and time to start braking when you approach a stop sign. Avoid slamming on the brakes. Keep in mind that most trikes come with a brake system for the front wheel and one for the back wheels. You can decide when you want to engage one of them or both of them.
